Security Guard Plants

The "Security Guard" Plants

Natural pest control and pollinators for the Calgary climate.

The "Guard"

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ Their Specialty

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ The Alberta Advantage

Marigolds

The Scent Barrier

Super tough. They handle our high-altitude UV rays without blinking.

Nasturtiums

The "Trap" Crop

Aphids love these! They lure pests away from your expensive Ranunculus.

Chives

The Perimeter Alarm

Smells like onions to us, but like "Keep Out" to rabbits and deer.

Sweet Alyssum

The Beneficial Magnet

Tiny white flowers that bring in "good bugs" to eat the "bad bugs."

Basil

The Scent Masker

Confuses pests so they can't find your sweet potatoes.

Borage

The Bee Beacon

Deep roots that break up our heavy Calgary clay soil.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ How to Layout Your "Fortress"

๐ŸŒธ The Flower Guard (For your Ranunculus & Anemones)

Since these are your "Spring Jewels," they need protection early.

  • The Border: Plant Chives around the edge of your flower bed. Calgary rabbits are hungry in May, and they hate the smell of chives.

  • The Interplant: Tuck Nasturtium seeds between your flowers. As the Ranunculus finish their bloom in the July heat, the Nasturtiums will crawl over the space and keep the soil cool.

๐Ÿ  The Sweet Potato "Safe Zone"

Sweet potatoes take a long time to grow, so they need a long-term security detail.

  • The Ground Cover: Plant Sweet Alyssum right under the sweet potato vines. It acts like a "living mulch," keeping the moisture in the ground during our dry Calgary July.

  • The Tall Guards: Place Marigolds at the four corners of your bed. They protect the tubers underground from tiny pests we can't see.

โš ๏ธ The "Alberta Reality Check"

Even the best security guards need a hand sometimes. In Calgary, we have two "Villains" that no plant can stop:

  1. The "June Monsoon" Slugs: Our damp June mornings bring out the slugs. Marigolds actually attract them. If you see holes, sprinkle crushed eggshells around your favorite plantsโ€”itโ€™s like walking on broken glass for a slug!

  2. The "July Hail" Monster: No plant can stop a Calgary hailstorm. Always have your Hail Netting or an old laundry basket ready to toss over your plants when the sky turns that "scary green" color.

๐Ÿ›’ Your "Security Team" Shopping List
