Ranunculus & Anemones

🌸 Ranunculus & Anemones (The Early Bloomers)

How to grow high-end, florist-quality flowers in a Calgary basement.

  • 📅 Start Date: Late March (Now!) for pre-sprouting indoors.

  • 🧤 The "Wake-Up" Soak: These corms look like dry, shriveled "octopus feet." Soak them in room-temperature water for 4–6 hours.

    • Pro Tip: Don't leave them overnight or they might "drown" from lack of oxygen.

  • 🌱 Pre-Sprouting (The Secret Step): * Fill a shallow tray with 2 inches of moist (not dripping) soil-less mix.

    • Place corms "claws down," cover with 1 inch of soil.

    • Crucial: Keep this tray in a cool, dark spot (10°C–15°C) for 2 weeks. A cold corner of the basement floor is actually good here!

  • 💡 Light: Once you see green shoots poking up (around mid-April), move them under your LED shop lights for 12–14 hours a day.

❄️ Calgary Timing: These are "Hardy Annuals." You can actually plant them in the ground in late April. They don't mind a light frost, but keep an old bedsheet handy to cover them if we get a real "April Surprise" snowstorm.

📍 Where to Buy in Calgary (Spring 2026)

I've done a quick scout of our local shops. Since it's late March, stock is moving fast!

For Ranunculus & Anemone Corms:

  • The Botanist Calgary (NE): They currently have "Amandine Marshmallow" Ranunculus corms available for pre-order and pickup. This variety is famous for being more heat-tolerant (perfect for our hot Calgary Julys).

  • Prairie Lane Flowers: Check their online shop for local Calgary pickup; they specialize in the "Amandine" series which produces 10–15 flowers per plant!

  • Golden Acre Home & Garden: They have a wide selection of spring bulbs and corms arriving weekly. It’s worth a call to see if their "Purple Sensation" or "White" packs are in stock.

For "Georgia Jet" Sweet Potato Slips:

  • Greengate Garden Centres: Always a staple for specialty items. They are currently hosting seed-starting workshops and carry a vast inventory of short-season starts.

  • Plantation Garden Centre: This is a "hidden gem" in Calgary for unique edible starts. Call ahead to see if they have slips arriving in May/June.

  • Calgary Horticultural Society (Gardeners' Market): Mark your calendar for April 25, 2026! Their "Gardeners' Market" is the best place to find specialty local growers who have already done the hard work of starting slips for you.

⚠️ The "Chinook" Caution

Remember, class: Calgary is famous for the Chinook. A sunny 15°C afternoon can drop to -10°C in the blink of an eye.

  • Always keep your "frost blankets" (or heavy plastic) near the back door.

  • Never plant your sweet potatoes until the soil is warm to the touch (usually mid-June).

  • But your Ranunculus can go out early—they are the "tough kids" of the garden!
